Our Vision

We seek to achieve a workforce of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medical/Health (STEMM) professionals that is fully reflective of the rich diversity of the Nation.

Our Mission

To inspire, support, and recognize students and professionals, especially those from underserved communities, in order to create a talent pool of STEMM leaders dedicated to serving the Nation.

The Populations We Serve

Pre-College Teachers: 

  • Workshops on innovative instructional strategies and standards-based strategies to inspire and support students to pursue careers in STEMM.

Middle and High School Students:

  • Hands-on, age-appropriate experiences and exposure to scientific discovery and technological innovation
  • Seminars in preparation for collegiate academic and social success
  • Seminars to assist parents/caregivers in facilitating the success of their students
  • Scholarships

Undergraduate Students:

  • Seminars and engaging competitive games that teach real-world technological skills (e.g., root cause analysis) and critical professional skills (e.g., scientific/technical and social communication, and teaming) in preparation for entry into the professional workforce and graduate study

Graduate Students:

  • Seminar (e.g., preparation for academic and non-academic careers) and communication (e.g., research poster competitions) opportunities in preparation for the STEMM technical professional and academic workforces

  • Recognition of professional attainment at the early career, mid-career, and senior career levels
  • Seminars in support of leadership as well as entrepreneurial and professional success in STEMM careers

  • Culturally responsive teaching strategies for STEMM students.
  • Facilitating and supporting student resilience

Colleges and Universities: 

  • Recognition of academic and social support activities resulting in quantitative narrowing of gaps in the retention and graduation rates of students from underserved populations compared to majority populations
  • Facilitation mentor-protégé relationships

Businesses and Industries:

  • Provision of Intern and Young Professional Success webinars
  • Recognition of professional and social support activities resulting in quantitative narrowing of gaps in recruitment, retention, and promotion rates of individuals from underserved populations compared to majority populations
  • Facilitation of mentor-protégé relationships

Scientific, Engineering, and Technical Societies:

  • Recognition of professional and social support activities resulting in quantitative narrowing of gaps in recruitment, retention, volunteer service, and leadership rates of members drawn from underserved populations compared to majority populations
  • Facilitation of mentor-protégé relationships

Impact

  • Since 1997 – Over 10,000 college/university students matched with mentors
  • Since 1999 – Over 2200 college/university undergraduate and graduate students provided scholarships/fellowships totaling over $5,800,000
  • Since 2001 – Over 140,000 pre-college students encouraged to pursue STEMM
