Call for Applicants and Reviewers – DOE Inclusive Energy Innovation Prize

Great Minds in STEM strongly encourages individuals or teams from underserved and underrepresented groups to apply for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) and the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity (ED) Inclusive Energy Innovation Prize, a two-phase competition that will award up to $2.5 million total in cash prizes to support entrepreneurship and innovation in communities historically underrepresented and underserved in the energy sector.

The Inclusive Energy Innovation Prize aims to fund organizations for ongoing and/or proposed activities related to climate and clean energy that support, build trust, and strengthen relationships and partnerships with disadvantaged communities.  In Phase One, up to 10 winners will receive an initial cash prize of up to $200,000 each, with the opportunity to receive additional awards. Winners from Phase One will receive in-kind mentorship and other support services to ensure their success. In Phase Two, up to three teams will be awarded cash prizes from a prize pool of $500,000.

DOE is also looking for diverse professionals who work in disadvantaged communities; have experience in clean energy industry, utilities, entrepreneurship, innovation, acceleration activities; and have a passion for energy justice, climate justice, environmental justice, clean energy transition, community engagement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Reviewers will receive 5-7 application packages, each of which will take up to 2 hours to review. The application packages are made up of a cover page, a three-minute video pitch, a 5,000-word impact plan, and a summary slide.   The review period will take place from March 1 -18, 2022. As a reviewer, you will be compensated $500 for your time.  If interested, please complete the Reviewer Interest Form by Friday, February 18, at 11:59 p.m. EST.   A Reviewer Webinar will be hosted on February 24 to review application criteria and scoring guide, as well as walk you through the review platform.   Please direct questions/comments to inclusiveinnovation@nrel.gov
